At Bald Hill Kia in Warwick, RI, we love to educate the driving community about safely sharing the road with bicyclists and pedestrians. When you drive, it is important to be aware that cyclists aren't always seen right away, so being distracted is dangerous! This is also true when you park on the road, as cyclists can ride in bike lanes, which are compromised when you open your car doors.

Knowing the hand signals bicyclists make is important. A left arm turned down at a 90-degree angle indicates that a cyclist is stopping or slowing down, while the left arm up at a 90-degree angle means that they will turn right. If the left arm is straight out, they will turn left.

It is also important to give a bicyclist at least three feet of space in every direction. Take time to go around cyclists in traffic and allow them plenty of space to keep traveling on the road. Pay close attention to your surroundings in traffic, which means using the electronics in your vehicle or your smartphone should be limited to your passengers.
