A bunch of adventurists looking to prove to the world the impressive fuel economy of their 2011 Optima Hybrid, Kia has embarked on a mission: to earn a place in the Guinness Book of World Records for demonstrating the most impressive fuel economy of any gasoline hybrid car that has ever attempted to drive through the 48 adjoining U.S. states.

The Kia Optima journey, started in the last week of August, in GA. Traveling eight-thousand miles, clockwise, over the course of 16 days, the stint ends in SC.

On Day 11 of the Kia Optima Hybrid x-country trip, the team stopped in the Windy City, where they filled up for only the fourth time since Day One. The team blogged, "...Stopping on the south side of the city we filled up with 22.194 gallons after driving 1,519.4, giving us a calculated 68.46 mpg U.S...."1 Yeah, that's fuel economy worth noting. Plus, those numbers translate into 1,500-plus miles per single tank of fuel.

Parleying their way back to the east coast, the Kia Optima Hybrid troupe stopped in Norwalk, Connecticut for their sixth fill-up. There, gas prices were astronomically high - over $4.21/gallon. But, due to the camel-like properties of the Kia Optima Hybrid, the team felt sure it would be the final fill-up of the trip.  They wrote, "On the last tank, running on the ethanol-blend fuel and heading through...rain storms and fierce winds, the [Kia] Optima Hybrid still returned over 60 mpg."2
